CoralWatch at the University of Queensland is excited to announce that we have been awarded an Engaging Science Grant from the Queensland Department of Environment, Tourism, Science and Innovation (DETSI) to deliver Outback to Ocean, a new series of immersive educational workshops across regional Queensland.
Outback to Ocean is a community education program that connects inland and coastal environments by exploring the story of coral reefs, from ancient marine fossils found in Queensland’s outback to the living reef systems of today. The program brings together science, storytelling, and local landscapes to explore how reefs have changed over time, and what we can do to help protect them into the future. The program celebrates Queensland’s unique environments and highlights the role we all play in sustaining them for the future.
Delivered across regional and remote communities, each workshop is designed to be interactive and engaging, offering participants an immersive learning experience. Activities will include hands-on coral monitoring using virtual reef tools, immersive Augmented Reality experiences of coral ecosystems, and opportunities to engage directly with Queensland scientists. The program also encourages discussion around reef ecosystems of the past, present, and future, climate change, reef conservation, and the importance of environmental stewardship.
We look forward to working with schools and communities across Queensland to bring this program to life and share the story of our reefs from the outback to ocean.
