Youth Ambassadors Program

Get involved and help protect the Great Barrier Reef

The Youth Ambassador Program is an initiative run by CoralWatch that engages young people in reef monitoring, environmental education, and community outreach to help protect coral reefs, especially the Great Barrier Reef.

  • It’s a workshop-based program designed for young people (typically around 8–14 years old) alongside a parent or guardian.

  • Participants learn about coral biology, reef health, climate change impacts, and citizen science.

  • The program teaches valuable monitoring skills (like using the Coral Health Chart), science communication, and how to inspire behaviour change in others to protect reefs.

Workshops are open to young coral crusaders aged 8 to 14 years, together with their parent/guardian. Participants are selected through a formal application process. Workshops are focused on regions, up to date CoralWatch has delivered Youth Ambassadors workshops in Bundaberg, Townville and Yeppoon.

The CoralWatch Youth Ambassador Program is about empowering the next generation to become informed and motivated reef advocates who can help protect coral reefs through science, education, and community action.

Our Youth Ambassadors

Since 2024 CoralWatch has trained 24 Youth Ambassador teams. They are located all across the QLD coast and can help you with local activities and events.

“The Coral Ambassador Workshop was an unforgettable experience! It was beautifully organized, with a perfect balance of hands-on activities, field trips, and learning opportunities. Visiting AIMS and Magnetic Island was a highlight, allowing us to apply our new knowledge in meaningful ways. I also loved how the workshop integrated Indigenous culture, offering a deeper understanding of Australia’s rich heritage and its connection to marine conservation. It’s an exceptional program for both adults and kids, fostering a sense of responsibility toward protecting our environment. I highly recommend this workshop and would absolutely participate again”
